Black Market Records Official
Over 35 years ago we launched Black Market with our first club night and in 1988 opened the doors to the now legendary Black Market Records shop in Soho. While the space on D'Arblay Street has gone quiet, Black Market has never stopped.
BBC Radio 6: Larry Heard Special w/ Gilles Peterson
Gilles is joined by Chicago’s Larry Heard for an extended focus on one of the originators of House music. They discuss his musical upbringing, play music from his prolific career and premier some unearthed demotapes recorded to cassette by Larry in 1989-90.
Plus the likes of The Black Madonna, Leon Vynehall, Henry Wu and Larry’s manager (and Black Market Records founder) Rene Gelston help to fill in the gaps on a true dance music pioneer.
Black Market Records, circa 1989
The dance music scene in London during the eighties and nineties was like none other. The music that flowed through the shop was constantly breaking new ground, an entire culture birthed along with it.
